Welcome to the Cook County / Grand Marais EDA Housing Program website. We hope that this site will give you valuable information about our programs and what we can offer you.
The Cook County Grand Marais Workforce Housing Subcommittee is excited to report that they have narrowed the choice and location of the first two workforce housing initiatives that they will be seeking to develop during 2016/2017. Choosing property locations allows us to begin the next steps in attempting to secure the funding to bring the projects to reality.
These locations were chosen after an exhaustive effort to understand the housing needs within the community as well as the desires of the potential property renters/owners. To get to this point, the housing committee compiled and used the following data:
- Cook County Workforce Housing Study, January 2015, Community Partners Research
- Cook County Affordable Workforce Online Housing Study
- Cook County Affordable Workforce Housing Focus Group Report
- Cook County Affordable Workforce Housing Business Owner Focus Group Report
- Cook County Affordable Workforce Housing Targeted Property Profiles
- Cook County Affordable Housing Site Review Team
It was determined that the immediate need is for rental housing exists on the west end of the county while the east end of the county needs single family homes. The property currently under evaluation on the west end is parcel number 27-127-4400, which overall is 23.68 acres. Although, this is more land than would be needed for the initial development. The EDA is attempting to partner with another business who may also have interest in a piece of this parcel. The property in Grand Marais is parcel number 80-020-2400, a 19.5 acre site of which the EDA is interested in almost 6 acres.
On Monday November 16th, the committee met in a full day session to develop a timeline. Next steps include securing developers and financing as well as determining the type of housing suitable for each location. Funding continues to be the priority and the committee members have begun meeting with local bankers, opening dialog with DEED resources and other potential grant organizations. Future conversations will occur with both the city and county. WE anticipate complete updates at the February EDA meeting.
Grants from both the Lloyd K. Johnson and Northland Foundation have supported this project. Completion of the study is scheduled for on or before May, 2016.
